"an open visual investigation of the feminine"

Juror's Statement

In jurying Herself, I sought art that explores female experiences from intersectional and multi-dimensional perspectives. The works on view were chosen from over 250 submissions. They were selected for the depth of their exploration of the characteristics, behaviors, roles, and complex sense of embodiment associated with the feminine. In addition to quality and conceptual rigor, I thought a lot about how these works would sit together in a room and the kinds of conversations that might arise from their juxtaposition. Many of the artists gathered here explore the societal pressures imposed upon female bodies and minds as well as the complex ways in which race, ethnicity, and sexual orientation intensify and complicate those forces. The tone ranges from somber to joyous as it explores both the sorrow and delight of what it means to be a woman in our society.

Education, Exhibition and Collaboration

The Lexington Art League creates opportunities for Lexington area artists and those who appreciate their work. We do this by presenting an engaging and diverse exhibition program, sponsoring public events, providing arts education, and creating productive partnerships with other individuals and organizations.

Our mission is to support artists in the Lexington area, and throughout Kentucky, through exhibition, education, and collaboration. We cannot do it without the kind support of our donors, sponsors, and volunteers. Every year we rely on YOUR generosity to keep our doors open and our exhibitions admission free! Artists in Lexington and Kentucky would not have the opportunity to show their work in the Historic Loudoun House galleries if we didn't have support from people like YOU. People who care about supporting the arts IN our community and supporting the arts FOR our community are our greatest resource.
